The Breathtakingly Beautiful Windward Coast
Located in the shadows of 2,000-foot Koolau peaks, the Windward Coast of O’ahu features a lush country landscape between the dramatic drop-off of the volcanic mountain range and the white-sand beaches of the shoreline. It’s only a short drive from Waikiki and Honolulu, but the mountainous Pali Highway is not your typical city commute.
The Windward Coast stretches up the eastern side of the island of O’ahu from north to south and encompasses the cities of Kahuku, Laie, Hauula, Punaluu, Waikane, Kahalu’u, Heeia, Kailua, and Waimanalo.
Natural Beauty, Beaches Galore, Rich Culture and More
Popular beaches (including world-famous Kailua and Lanikai beaches, where many celebrities have vacationed) abound, and further north on the Windward Coast are several popular boat launches for fishing and sailing enthusiasts.
The Polynesian Cultural Center, located in the small town of Laie, is one of the island’s most popular visitor attractions. Another amazing site, the Valley of the Temples, is home to an amazing Japanese Buddhist temple, while a nearby restaurant at Heeia Kea Pier offers fresh-off-the-boat cuisine that epitomizes the farm-to-fork trend.
Even More Attractions
If you think you’ve seen it all, you probably haven’t. The Windward Coast is also home to Sea Life Park, Makapuu Lighthouse, and the Hanama Nature Preserve. Other popular attractions include the Kailua and Lanikai beaches, Turtle Bay Resort, and the Waimanalo Polo Fields.
It’s also home to Kuala Ranch, which millions of eyes have seen, though few recognize it by name. It’s been the backdrop to many movies and TV shows, including LOST. Consisting of dense rainforest and white-sand beaches, this preserved natural ranch offers countless adventure activities, from horseback riding and ATV rides to ocean voyaging and Hula lessons.
