Private Beaches, Scenic Overlooks, and Luxurious Resorts
Also called the “Leeward Coast”, West O’ahu is a mostly flat plain spanning from the west loch of Pearl Harbor to the former Naval Air station Barbers Point. Nestled into the foot of the 4000 foot Waianae mountain range, the Leeward Coast is located less than 30 miles from Waikiki and features rural towns, quiet beaches, and a luxurious and popular resort area. Once home to sugar cane plantations, the area is slowly growing and developing residential and business communities to meet the needs of the increasing resident population of O’ahu. The city of Kapolei features an expanding office, retail, and industrial sector that is expected to continue growing in the next 15 years.
What does this mean for western O’ahu? More to do, more jobs, improved economy. It means better housing values and increased quality of life. It means that now is the time to invest in Leeward Coast homes.
Hawaii is best known for its breathtaking beaches, luxurious resorts, world-class golf, and scenic overlooks, and the Leeward Coast is not lacking in any of these attractions. The Ko Olina Resort is a 43 acre marina offering miles of beautiful beaches, various water sports, and golf. it’s also home to the J.W. Marriot Ihilani Resort and Spa and Aulani, a Disney resort and spa.
Additionally, the Leeward Coast is home to the Wet n’ Wild Hawaii water park, Makaha Beach Park (one of Hawaii’s best-known surfing spots), and Hawaii’s Plantation Village, where visitors can explore a living history museum that tells the story of Hawaii’s sugar plantations.
Further Exploration and Activities
Though the Ko Olina Resort might be enough to consume an entire vacation, it’s not nearly the only attraction of western O’ahu deserving attention. One of the most beautiful places on the island is Kaena Point, located on the western tip of O’ahu and only reachable by means of a short and scenic hike beginning in Kaena Beach State Park. This location is both breathtaking and sacred; it is said ancient Hawaiians would jump from these dramatic lava cliffs to meet the souls of their ancestors.
Another recommended adventure is a trip up the Waianae Coast on route 93. Besides miles of scenic coastline, this trip gives you a chance to escape the crowds and enjoy the intimate beauty of the island in solitude. Drive far enough up the coast to reach Yokohama Bay State Park, one of the few places on O’ahu completely untouched by development.
